How to read the classifications in stage races
Yellow, green, polka-dot and white are four different races in one. We explain what each classification means.
A grand tour is not one race but several running in parallel. Each leader’s jersey tells a different story and calls for different tactics.
General and points
The general classification adds up times from every stage, so the yellow jersey leader is the fastest rider of the whole race. The points classification rewards consistency at finishes and intermediate sprints, which is why sprinters usually wear it.
Mountains and youth
The mountains jersey counts points from summits, and its holder is often a breakaway specialist. White goes to the best young rider and often signals a future general contender.
