How to pick the right road frame size

Frame size decides comfort and control more than any accessory. We explain where to start and what not to judge by eye.

A frame that is too big can be hard to handle, one that is too small takes away stability at higher speed. Instead of guessing from height, use two measures: inside leg length and torso-plus-arm reach.

Reach and stack, not a size chart

Modern frames are best compared through reach and stack. They tell you how far and how low you sit to the bars, and different brands can size the same S or M very differently.

When to see a bike fitter

If your wrists, neck or knees hurt after an hour, that is a sign to get a professional fit. A good fitting can rescue an expensive purchase that looked perfect on paper.
